It\u2019s a\nwonder he even had time for the brief visit today,\u201d explains the professor. \u201cDo\nyou still keep Superman\u2019s visits confidential Eden?<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cOf\ncourse professor Larson; no one would believe me anyway,\u201d jokes Eden. \u201cNo\nseriously professor; I am loyal to you; I appreciate the opportunity to work\nwith you and everything you have done for me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI\nknow Eden; it\u2019s just all this business with Evan Frost and the 20 million\ndollar bounty on Superman,\u201d explains the professor.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cSuperman\nis indestructible; you would have to be a fool to challenge him; whoever tries\nto collect that 20 million will be sorry,\u201d consoles Eden.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI\nonly wish\u2026,\u201d replies the professor, but stops short.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhat\ndid you say professor?\u201d asks Eden with interest.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cOh\u2026nothing\nimportant; I have to renew my passport so I\u2019m leaving for the day. Sure you\nwon\u2019t change your mind and tag along with me to China? The Great Wall \u2013 The\nForbidden City \u2013 The Emperor\u2019s Terracotta Army,\u201d offers the Professor. \u201cI\u2019m\nleaving Saturday morning!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThanks\nagain for the offer; but I need to finish writing the computer program if were\ngoing to be on schedule for next month,\u201d reminds Eden.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI\nguess your right. I\u2019m worthless when it come to computers; thanks goodness for\nyou Eden. Now if you\u2019re talking nuclear physics or rocket science I\u2019m your\nman,\u201d jokes the professor.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eden\nlaughs and says, \u201cSee you tomorrow Professor Larson. I\u2019ll lock up when I leave\nand set the alarm.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cBye\nEden; I\u2019ll need a ride to the airport Saturday,\u201d says the professor as he\nleaves the control room.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI\u2019ll\nbring the coffee,\u201d replies Eden before the lead doors close.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eden\nwatches the professor on the HD screen as his white Escalade leaves the\ncompound and the motorized gates closes as his car leave the compound.\n\u201c\u2026kryptonite? Superman has a weakness? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eden\nquickly returns to his screen and keys in a query of the lab\u2019s mainframe using\nthe work kryptonite\u2026no matches found. I wonder if I spelled it right. I guess\nhe would not leave it on the mainframe. He\u2019s not that careless. What did he say\nto Superman? He hides things in plain sight so they will be overlooked. Well\nthen, it&#8217;s off to the sample room!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eden\nleaves the control room and walks past the sealed radiation well to the far\nside of the lab. He stops before a single metal door that has black letters on\nit that reads: Sample Room; he stops before a keypad next to the door and\nenters a sequence of numbers and the doors buzzes and the lock disengages. He\nenters the room and triggers a motion detector and the lights overhead snap on.\nThe room is large and chucked full of metal shelves containing boxes of all\nshapes and sizes \u2013 some made of metal &#8211; some of cardboard. Each shelving units\nhas a small metal ID plate with a letter affixed to it. Eden quickly makes his\nway to the shelving unit displaying the letter \u201cK.\u201d He scans the shelf and\nfinds a small lead box with a white tag attached to its handle that reads in\ncursive: kryptonite. It can\u2019t be this easy!<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/span>Eden removes the lead container and sets it on the floor; he opens the\nbox and finds two items in the small lead box: a flash drive and small lead\nfoil envelop. He pockets the flash drive and opens the foil envelope and finds\na thick piece of rectangular glass 4\u201d long x 1\u201d tall infused with numerous\nsmall green glowing particles. This is kryptonite? So this is the chink in\nSuperman\u2019s armor? Is it a coincidence that kryptonite is the same color as\nmoney?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eden\nputs the glass plate back into the foil envelop and returns it to the box; he\ncloses the lead box and returns the box to its proper place on the shelf. Eden\nleaves the sample room and quickly returns to the control room and inserts the\nflash drive into the computer console. It\u2019s a log! The professor\u2019s data on\nSuperman! Eden quickly accesses the log and scans through it and finds a few\ninteresting excerpts:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">23 October 2004: kryptonite:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Green Kryptonite: DEADLY TO\nSUPERMAN; kryptonite causes Superman immediate physical pain and\ndebilitation and will kill him within a matter hours with sustained exposure.\nKryptonite is a radioactive isotope; it is a fragment of Superman&#8217;s home world\nof Krypton. In the last days of Krypton, a chain reaction within the planet&#8217;s\ncore caused a build-up of enormous pressures. These pressures fused the\nminerals inside Krypton into the new, radioactive, super-actinide element\nkryptonium. Furthermore, the pressure grew to be too much for the planet&#8217;s\nmantle to contain, and Krypton exploded in a violent eruption. The resulting\nkryptonite is the ore of kryptonium, and it is best known for its green hue.\nEven if the planet Krypton had not exploded, the radiation from the kryptonite\nwould have eventually killed all the inhabitants in what the Kryptonians called\nthe Green Death. Kal El, AKA Superman escaped to Earth before all life on the\nplanet was extinguished.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">29 December 2004: effects:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Though the radiation from\nkryptonite is somewhat harmful to all life over extended periods of time, it is\nespecially harmful to Kryptonians, most notably Superman. Kryptonite radiation\nrapidly fills Superman&#8217;s cells and painfully drives out the solar energy he\nstores from our sun robbing him of his superpowers and rendering him completely\nhelpless. Prolonged exposure to kryptonite would most likely be fatal to\nSuperman. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">1 January 2005: <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><\/p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/u><p><u><em><span style=\"color: #0b5394;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">The only known sources of\nkryptonite on Earth are<span class=\"boardpost1\"> a few large fragments<\/span> that\nwere attached to the rocket ship that brought Superman to Earth. This fragments\nor meteors weigh approximately 2 pounds each; storing kryptonite within a lead\ncontainer shields Superman from the elements crippling radiation. The alien element has resisted all\nconventional analysis to date. I started construction of the radiation well I\nneed to analysis kryptonite; government grant for an elemental amplifier was a\nlucky break. I will at last be able to try to unlock the secret of kryptonite and\nhopefully neutralize its deadly effects on Superman.
