Superman saw an open bottle of\nscotch on his dressing table, nearly empty. Knotts wheeled about on his chair,\nand gawked open-mouthed. \u201cHell, you ain\u2019t Georgie Porgie Puddin\u2019 Belly. You\u2019re\nthe Real Deal himself, the Man of Steel! Well \u2018Doggies,\u2019 as Andy would say. I\nshould\u2019a known straight-off it wasn\u2019t Big George, not the way you fill out\nthose tights. Pecs, arms, shoulders and all. Especially those shorts!\u201d Superman\naccepted the strange compliment with a deferential nod, back-handed and odd as\nit seemed. He chalked it up to the booze and the actor\u2019s apparently miffed mood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI\u2019m kind of a big fan of yours, Mr.<span>&nbsp;\n<\/span>Knotts\u201d he muttered apologetically. \u201cI was wondering if you might give\nme a \u2013well, a sort of interview&#8230; so I could pass it on to a young friend of\nmine who just started working at the Daily Planet?\u201d Superman humbly asked.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWell, well, Superman himself is a fan, eh? Well, as you can see the\nreporters aren\u2019t exactly beating down my door for interviews. That\u2019s the\ntrouble with being a good actor, when you make it look too easy everyone\nassumes you\u2019re just playing yourself. Superman noticed there were several other\nseparate folders that were unmarked.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Knotts selected some pictures of himself in uniform with his troop. Superman\nwas indeed impressed. The ramrod straight, whippet thin young man with the\nstern military bearing bore no relation to the character millions had come to\nknow and love as Barney Fife, not to mention his gallery of characters that all\nshared the signature Knotts stamp. \u201cSee here?\u201d he asked, pointing to one in\nparticular. A handsome young man was posing with Knotts, handing him a Samurai\nsword. That\u2019s Tim Irons, one of my recruits. He was the only one to survive a\nJap assault on his group\u2019s position. He captured a Jap colonel\u2019s sword later on\nin the battle, and presented it to me as a gift. Said if it wasn\u2019t for me\ndrilling the field manual into his empty head, he never would have made it\nthrough the war in one piece. It was a beauty! Tim said the colonel begged for\nit back. Said the big green stone on the handle was what he called a <em>Sky\nStone<\/em>. Blessed by some Shinto priest. Supposed to bring good luck and make\nhim defeat all his enemies. Figured the drunk who won it from me wouldn\u2019t even noticed\nit was missing, had so many other stones worked into the grip and guard. I\nfigured I could use the \u201cluck,\u201d since I already decided to try my hand at\nacting. I\u2019ve carried it with me ever since. He <span>&nbsp;<\/span>saw it wasn\u2019t set into any of Knott\u2019s jewelry,\neither his ring or the religious medal dangling on a necklace under his police\nofficer costume. Nor in his belt buckle or even hidden in his shoes. The only\nspot he couldn\u2019t make out was an object in his upper shirt pocket. The gray\nblob must be composed of lead as he couldn\u2019t see inside it. But the silhouette\nlooked like a simple large lipstick or eyeliner pencil case, doubtless for last\nminute makeup touch up on the set.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Knotts watched Superman\u2019s eyes wander over him and then fixate on his\npocket. \u201cNo fair using your super-powers, although I\u2019m guessing from your\npuzzled expression you\u2019re still not sure you\u2019ve spotted it. And I can guess\nwhy, too.\u201d With a grin he reached into his pocket and withdrew the object, a single\nbullet. \u201cLead-jacketed case, which is what must have thrown you off. Recognize\nit?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Superman did, for it was a well-known gag on the show. He\u2019d even used the\ngimmick on tonight\u2019s show. Andy would reluctantly hand Barney a single bullet\nwhen they went armed to capture some local ne\u2019er do well, securely buttoning it\nup in his breast pocket for safekeeping, so the famous hair-trigger temper of\nthe nervous deputy wouldn\u2019t cause a fatal accident.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt\u2019s much <em>bigger<\/em> than a round for a police revolver, like the one you\ncarry in the show,\u201d Superman noted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYeah, it\u2019s a souvenir from my rifle-range practice in the Army. Fits a heavy-caliber\nmachine gun. I figured it would be more visible as a sight-gag on the small\nscreen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe stone\u2019s inside?\u201d Superman quizzed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYep, that way it\u2019s always on me even when I\u2019m in costume and on the set. Here,\nlet me show it to you. I always wondered if it was a real gem or just costume. I\nshowed it to jewelers and they always told me they didn\u2019t recognize it, since it\nwasn\u2019t a precious stone. But you can never trust those guys, always trying to\nget you to sell things to them cheap. Maybe with your super-vision you can\ncheck it over for me.\u201d Superman shrugged and said he\u2019d use his microscopic\nvision. He wasn\u2019t an expert gemologist, but he could tell him if it was just\nglass, a mineral accretion, or a true crystal gem.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Knotts twisted the brass bottom until the four-inch lead bullet casing\nseparated from the firing base. He tipped the top over the table and shook the\nstone out onto the table. It bounced once with a slightly tinny ping and then\nspun briefly like a top before settling onto one of its lopsided facets. Superman\ngasped and leapt back. The green glow was unmistakable, as was the pain\nshooting through him. The tiny long stone wasn\u2019t enough to kill him, but being\nthis near was excruciatingly painful, and the radiation was already affecting\nhis super-powers.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Superman didn\u2019t know if this was some sort of a trap or just an unlucky\ncoincidence. Knotts\u2019 look of genuine surprise at Superman\u2019s strange reaction\nspoke innocence on his part. But a Machiavellian villain such as Lex Luthor\ncould have easily switched this piece of Kryptonite with the original <em>Sky\nStone<\/em> and planted it on Knotts. Although how he could have known he would\neventually show it to Superman seemed beyond him at the moment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">So Superman tried to mask his discomfiture and simply blurted out some weak\nexcuse that his super-hearing had picked up the sound of nearby police sirens\nand he should check it out immediately. Superman started to lurch out of the\nroom backwards, but his knees buckled and he crashed into the small side table,\nsmashing it to bits. The folders spilled out onto the floor, revealing dozens\nof glossy photographs. Superman\u2019s vision was already getting weak and fuzzy,\nand the room was starting to spin slowly. But he was able to focus enough to\nverify what his startled first look had told him was true. Photo after photo\nshowed extremely handsome young men either nude or in the act of disrobing. He\nrecognized at least a few of them as young actors on the show, and others he\u2019d\nglimpsed in the group of well-wishers he\u2019d seen leaving for the after-show\nparty. They were obviously taken in this very room, and in more than one Knotts\nhimself could be seen in reflection in the dressing room mirror, half naked and\nmanning the camera. In some, Knotts had set up elaborate lighting and even\ninstalled portable movie cameras, doubtless borrowed from the set after hours.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Superman bent down and picked them up and stared at them for several\nseconds, then glared up at Knotts. This was something that needed to be dealt\nwith.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt, it isn\u2019t what you think. Those are just t-test shots\u2026you know,\ns-s-s-screen tests with some young uh, h-hopefuls. I\u2026 I try to help some young\nactors get a \u2026a foot in the door. This is a t-tough business,\u201d Knotts nervously\nstammered. And Superman knew from the sweat beading up on Knotts\u2019 forehead his\nagitation wasn\u2019t just play acting this time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cYes, a tough business. Made all the tougher by people like you preying on\nambitious and na\u00efve young men and boys. I suppose that is your \u2018casting\ncouch\u2019?\u201d Superman thundered in disgust, pointing to the small bed in the back\nof the dressing room.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt isn\u2019t what you think. I\u2026. I n-never touched them, I s-swear!\u201d Don said,\nalmost pleading now. \u201cI.. I never touched any man. I never dared. First there\nwas my religious family, then my superior officers in the Army watching my\nevery move. Now there are these scandal sheets, ready to ruin careers just to\nsell copy. But I couldn\u2019t help myself. All of those beautiful young boys, all\nso willing to do just about anything to break into the business. But I could\nnever trust them, even the ones that let me know they would go all the way if I\njust said the word. So I just \u201clooked,\u201d I swear. Please don\u2019t tell anyone,\nSuperman\u201d Knotts pleaded woefully, finally breaking into tears.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Superman didn\u2019t know if the nausea in his stomach was from disgust at the\nrevelation that one of America\u2019s favorite funnymen was a pervert, or the\nradiation streaming from the Kryptonite shard. He just knew he had to get out\nof there quick, desperate to clear his head. He could work out a plan to deal\nwith Knotts and the Kryptonite later.
