Sure\nhis uncle was a genius, but to \u201cdefeat\u201d the Man of Steel seemed unachievable\neven for his intellect.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Bart was a good-looking youth\nalmost 17 years old. He stood just shy of 6\u2019 and weighted 160 lbs, had green\neyes, and short blond hair. Bart, like his uncle, Dumont, was manipulative as\nwell as deceptive; both had a cruel streak; it seemed to run in the family.\nDumont, a wealthy young scientist from a family that had been powerful for\ngenerations, had spent the last several years studying Earth\u2019s mightiest\nchampion, Superman, with the sole purpose of discovering any Achilles\u2019 Heel Superman\nmight have. Dumont, hated Superman and everything he stood for; it was a\nfixation driven by both envy and natural cruelty. He wanted to defeat Superman and\ndestroy him completely. Dumont wanted more than anything in the world to render\nthe muscled Titan powerless and then subject him to every conceivable act of\nhumiliation for his personal amusement. Bart smiled as he recalled his uncle\u2019s\nantics several days ago when he read the latest headline of the daily newspaper\nreporting on Superman\u2019s latest super feat; Dumont flipped out and threw a\ntantrum screaming he would defeat and utterly humiliate Superman by month\u2019s\nend.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">As Bart continued to drive\nnorth he recalled the events of the past year.<span>&nbsp;\n<\/span>Several months ago Dumont finally found what he thinks he has been\nlooking for; the pursuit of it had occupied literally every waking moment of\nDumont\u2019s time over the last several years searching every relevant internet\nsource and scientific resource available not to mention several grueling\nexpeditions to east Africa to glean data relevant to Superman. But Dumont\npersevered and eventually found what he believes is a fragment of Superman\u2019s\nhome world of Krypton. Several years ago Dumont developed a theory based on\nscientific data that the planet Krypton exploded back in 1980. Using star\ncharts and computer models only recently available, Dumont mathematically\ncalculated the time it would take fragments of Krypton to reach Earth. He then\ncross referenced the fragments likely course to Earth with the position of\nEarth upon arrival and calculated that any fragments from Krypton large enough\nto survive the penetration of Earth\u2019s atmosphere would impact Earth in east\nAfrica; more precisely: Ethiopia.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">On a subsequent expedition Dumont found a few\nsuspected fragments of Krypton in an obscure museum in Addis Abba and bought\nthem. Over the next several weeks of testing he discovered the element was\nindeed quite rare, in fact alien, and one of kind with an atomic number in\nexcess of 126. Dumont named the element Kryptonite, after the doomed planet\nKrypton. He believes exposing any Kryptonians to Kryptonite will cause\nimmediate physical pain and debilitation; it might possibly kill Kryptonians\nwith prolonged exposure. Dumont theorizes that the mechanism by which green\nKryptonite may hurt Superman is based on the fact that in some ways Superman is\na living solar battery. Superman\u2019s cells absorb electromagnetic radiation from\nyellow stars such as Earth\u2019s sun which is the power source of his tremendous\nabilities and superpowers. Kryptonite&#8217;s radioactivity will interfere with this\nsemi-photosynthetic process, and drive the energy of Earth\u2019s yellow sun out of Superman\u2019s\ncells in a very painful method rendering him utterly helpless before the bearer\nof Kryptonite.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">*********************************************************<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">After what seems like an eternity\nBart finally reaches his destination: a secluded hangar on a deserted airstrip\nin a remote area far north of the city. Bart approaches the hangar and keys a\ncode into his blackberry and the large hangar\u2019s doors divide and slide open. He\ndrives the truck into the hangar and parks the truck near the back wall as the hangar\ndoors close behind of him. It is shortly after 10PM on a Sunday night. Carrying\na heavy lead case, he makes his way to the back wall of the hangar and through\na passageway that leads to service elevator and an array of steel stairs that\ndescends more than 40 feet below the thick concrete hangar floor. The elevator\nhas a sign that reads: \u201cOUT OF SERVICE.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Bart angrily yells, \u201cDumont,\nyou cheap bastard!\u201d He gloomily descends the numerous stairs carrying the heavy\nlead box cursing Dumont as descends. Bart finally reaches the bottom of the\nshaft and enters an anteroom and stands before an enormous steel blast door.\nBart moves to a keypad on the concrete wall next to the blast door and punches\nin a numeric code. Bart hears the whirl of machinery as the steel blast door\nshifts slightly and begins to rise and then stops with a loud thud that echoes\nthrough the anteroom. \u201cI\u2019m surprised the door is mechanized instead of a manual\ncrank,\u201d thinks Bart cynically.\u201d Bart punches in another series of numbers and\nthe lights within the room flicker and begin to slowly ramp up to 1\/4\nillumination. He enters yet another series of numbers and he suddenly hears the\nhum of the air handlers ramping up.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Bart quickly enters the\nContainment Room and moves to a lead arch built over a yet another numeric\nkeypad recessed in the hangar wall. Within the arch Bart opens the lead box and\nstands for several minutes mesmerized by the eerie green glow from the\nKryptonite fragments that illuminates the dimly lit Containment Room. He\ncontemplates the order of a universe in which chain guns and missiles could not\ndestroy SUPERMAN but exposure to a seemingly harmless green rock could.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Bart almost feels a slight\nsliver of compassion for Superman who he had no idea that an element such as\nKryptonite even exists. In Superman\u2019s mind he is invulnerable and rightly so;\nuntil now nothing has been able to destroy Superman much less hurt him. Since Superman\u2019s\nemergence villains and criminals had conspired to destroy Superman every\nconceivable means: intense heat, intense cold, bombs, rockets, electricity, and\neven radiation. Nothing thus far has any been effective against the mighty Man\nof Steel! It seems everyone has given up trying and the crime rate has\nplummeted as Superman continues to foil the plans of many a career criminal.\nYes, everyone has given up their dreams of destroying Superman, except Dumont.\nYes, to date Superman is invincible; but that is about to change!<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Bart suddenly snaps back to\nreality and shrugs as he nervously checks the time: 10:25PM. \u201cWell, the\nKryptonite is here snug in the lead box ready for Superman! 35 minutes until I\nsend the signal to Superman! Well, I might as well head topside and have a well-deserved\nsmoke while I wait to signal Superman.\u201d Bart thought out loud. \u201cBeing way down\nhere in this tomb with this Kryptonite gives me the creeps.\u201d Bart replaces the\nlead cover on the container and starts up the double staircase leading to the hangar\nfloor high above cursing Dumont on every step up the long array of steel\nstaircases.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Above in the dark hangar Bart\npaces the large hangar floor chain smoking nervously and repeatedly checking\nhis watch waiting for the designated hour to signal Superman. I\u2019ve got to pull\nmyself together Bart thinks. I just hope Kryptonite does what it is supposed to\ndo otherwise I\u2019m toast, juvenile status or not. Bart took several deep breaths\nand shook himself to regain his composure. That\u2019s better thought Bart. He\nchecks his watch again: 10:57PM. \u201cClose enough. Show time! The end of Superman,\u201d\nsaid Bart excitedly. Bart takes the Blackberry from his belt clip Dumont\nprovided him and navigates to the untraceable e-mail address Dumont set up to\ncommunicate with Superman anonymously.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s\ntime to bring the Man of Steel down off his high horse!\u201d Bart says coldly. Bart\nlocates the message that Dumont authored earlier and presses \u201cSend.\u201d Bart reads\non the screen: \u201cSending Message.\u201d<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A few\nseconds later Bart reads: \u201cMessage Sent.\u201d Bart replaces the Blackberry back\nonto his belt clip and lights up as he nervously stares out the glass windows\nof the hangar scanning the clear night sky for any sign of Superman.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Bart continues to scan the\nclear moonlit night sky for a few minutes more, checks the time, butts out the\nsmoke, and decides Superman is most likely headed this way and he should head\nbelow. He quickly descends the stairs two at a time and runs into the\nContainment Room. He reaches the keypad inside the Containment Room under the\nlead arch and quickly punches another series of numbers into the pad and the\nblast door shifts slightly and begins to slowly lower. The door lumbers closed\nwith a heavy thud and a loud echo through the Containment Room. Bart hits\nanother series of numbers and there is another mechanical thud as the lights in\nthe hangar above illuminate. Bart listens anxiously as the air-handlers\ndisengage and slowly ramp down and stop. Now there is only dead silence in the\nroom as Bart stands uneasily within the lead arch Dumont has provided to cloak\nBart from Superman\u2019s x-ray vision; Bart shakily takes a cigarette from the pack\nand manages to steady his hand long enough to light it. He stands nervously\nsmoking the cigarette in the dark with one foot on the lead box waiting for Superman\nto arrive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Superman, the Man of Steel,\nswoops down out of silent night sky and touches done lightly on the tarmac\ndirectly in front of a lone hangar next to a small airstrip in a remote area\nfar north of the city on a cool and refreshing summer night in August. The\ncaped figure stands facing the structure\u2019s illuminated large metal and glass\ndoors for several moments appraising the secluded location and the lone\nstructure. Clark Kent had received a tip about a terrorist plot earlier that\nweek from a tipster named Dumont. He had promised to contact Clark when the\nterror plot was corroborated and then Dumont would divulge the plot only to Superman.\nLess than a quarter hour ago Dumont had signaled that he needed to meet with Superman\nimmediately at this remote location.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>As Superman\ntakes in his surroundings, he extensively scans the area both inside and\noutside the hangar with his super senses and finds no one within miles; he\ntakes one last look around and shrugs his shoulders and then walks to a door at\nthe side of the hangar.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Superman,\nthe Man of Steel, undisputed Male Titan of Earth, is nearly 30. The ripped,\nsculptured muscle hunk, still more man than man, stands 6 feet 3 inches tall\nand weighs 240 lbs. His spectacular body, his chiseled good looks, black hair\nwith a distinctive split curl, bright blue eyes and clear voice, not to mention\nthe aura and mystique of his super powers, make him a spectacular demi-god irresistible\nto both women and men. Superman wears a royal blue bodysuit with red trunks, a\nyellow leather belt, dark red leather boots, and a crimson red leather cape. A\nred and yellow \u201cS\u201d shield is emblazoned on Superman\u2019s overly-developed chest.\nIt&#8217;s a costume that only the Man of Steel can pull off and one that looks ridiculous\non an impersonator. On Superman, the costume looks perfect and perfectly normal\nfor a Super Powered icon of power and virtue.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Superman\ngoes to the unlocked side door of the hangar and enters the structure, his cape\nbillowing grandly behind him in the draft flowing through the large area. He\nstrolls boldly to near center of hangar and stops and quickly takes stock of\nhis surroundings. The structure is old yet in a good state of recent repair;\nthe hangar measures roughly 100\u2019 wide by 80\u2019 deep and consists of three masonry\nwalls that rise 50\u2019 to a flat sloped open roof and two huge recently mechanized\nsliding hangar doors, windowed from midpoint to the top. The hangar floor is\nclean and completely empty with exception of a 2007 red Avalanche parked in the\ncenter of the hangar perpendicular to the back wall near a passage way through\nthe concrete wall of the hangar; visible through the passage way is a stairwell\nand service elevator. Superman calls out, \u201cDumont!\u201d He calls out again and\nreceives no response. The hangar is empty.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Strange,\nthinks Superman as he walks to the passage way and observes the recessed keypad\nin the wall next to the passageway with a small LED display that reads:\n\u201cAnteroom Accessible.\u201d The passageway opens to a well-lit concrete shaft that\nhouses an array of steel stairs that descend about 40 feet to a passageway\nleading to a sub-structure beneath the hangar floor. The shaft also houses a\nlarge service elevator; a sign indicates the elevator is out of service.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">Superman\npeers down the array of stairs leading down the deep shaft for a moment then\nmoves back out onto the hangar floor and scans beneath the hangar floor with\nhis x-ray vision. His scan reveals a sub-structure deep beneath the hangar\nfloor consisting of a shaft leading to an anteroom which in turn opens to a\nlarge storage area. A sealed power room perpendicular to the narrow\nsub-structure is accessible from the storage area. Nothing appears very\nsinister down there; the substructure is completely empty and there is not a\nsoul around for miles. Superman walks to the truck and feels the hood. Odd,\nthinks Superman, it\u2019s still warm; and there is the smell of a recently smoked\ncigarette in the air; and yet there is no one around here for miles. \u201cWhere is\nDumont? This is the place he picked to meet,\u201d thinks Superman out loud. He\nsearches the vehicle but finds it completely empty and without any vehicle\ninsurance or registration cards.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; color: black;\">This\nis very odd thinks Superman as he inspects the machines shops, the small office\nand restrooms off the back of the hangar and finds them too completely empty.\nNo tools, workbenches, or any type of office equipment; not even a piece of\npaper and certainly no drugs, guns, cash, or evidence of any sinister plot\nbeing hatched way out here. Superman returns to the passageway and cranes his\nhead around looking down at the array of stairs that lead deep below. Superman turns\nand stares at the late model truck pondering the whereabouts of this mysterious\nDumont and the purpose of this recently renovated completely empty structure\nout in the middle of nowhere.
