He had been taken out… defeated!  What had happened he had no idea, but suddenly as he was surveying the hostile Arabian territory, enemies of the US and of the United Nations, he had felt weakness–dizziness–then he was falling!  He had become frightened, unable to maneuver in such a free fall!  Him!  Superman–but he did not know how high up he was or how fast he was flying or falling.The weakness he felt could only mean one thing, he had been rendered vulnerable.
